WE ARE A
COMMUNITY
ARCHIVE
DOCUMENT & ARCHIVE
Community archives are critical to document, preserve, and share the endangered knowledge of communities targeted by the state for violence and erasure. Our After Violence Archive holds stories, records, audio-video materials, writings and reflections, artworks, cultural ephemera, and other materials from communities impacted by police brutality, mass incarceration, and the death penalty.
LEARN & Share
We listen, experiment, research, and create critical resources to support safe, ethical, and effective community-based documentation, archiving, and advocacy. We also advise archives, museums, schools, universities, foundations, and other organizations and institutions in a range of areas related to documentation and archiving, community programs, administration and operations, revenue generation, and strategic planning.
Create & Engage
Our Visions After Violence community fellowships and artist/writer residencies invite activists and creatives directly impacted by state violence to create community-based documentation, archival, and advocacy projects. Through these collaborations, we create new collections, publish zines and other writings, and host events and exhibits.
ABolish & Heal
We fight for abolition of the prison-industrial complex and the death penalty as a path toward justice, freedom, and liberation. We help cultivate cultures of care and accountability that address and prevent violence without compounding harm and trauma. We break down barriers to mental health access and healing to help mend families and communities torn apart by state violence. Our Access to Treatment Initiative is the only program in the U.S. and the world that expands mental health access for the families of people sentenced to death or executed by the state.
