WE ARE A
COMMUNITY
ARCHIVE
that centers the dignity, agency, and expertise of individuals, families, and communities directly impacted by state violence.
MISSION
After Violence Project is a public memory archive that fosters deeper understandings of the impacts of state violence. Our mission is to help build power with directly impacted communities, centering their dignity, agency, and expertise to cultivate restorative and transformative justice.
VISION
Our vision is a culture of care that addresses and prevents violence without compounding harm and trauma. A culture that centers the needs of victims, survivors, and their loved ones through community-based accountability and healing. Where family and community relationships that have been torn apart by the carceral state have been mended.
ADVOCACY STATEMENT
The criminal legal system is not effective, causes more harm and trauma, and tears our communities apart. Our advocacy is grounded in collective and individual memory work that strives to hold those in power accountable for the harms and helps build power with directly impacted communities, centering their dignity, agency, and expertise to cultivate restorative and transformative justice.
STORIES FROM THE ARCHIVE
WHAT WE DO
ADVOCACY
With guidance from our Community Advisory Council, we are expanding our community advocacy efforts by “activating” our archives of stories and records of loss, resistance, and survival.
PROGRAMS
Our Community Programs bring our archival ethics, documentation processes, and creative practices together. Community Programs ground, reimagine, and challenge our memory work.
ARCHIVE
We believe that documenting narratives of survival and healing is crucial to futures in which care and accountability are prioritized over state-sanctioned punishment and retribution.
VALUES
LIVED EXPERIENCE
We value the lived experience of those directly impacted by state violence. We center their voices and insights to guide our efforts to reshape justice and accountability.
HEALING
We reject responses to violence that perpetuate harm or trauma and instead advocate for healing and restorative practices.
ROOTS OF STATE VIOLENCE
We recognize that state violence stems from the tools of white supremacy, such as the hetero-patriarchy, colonialism, ableism, racism, classism, capitalism, and homophobia.
HONORING GRIEF
We honor grief as a way to heal and transform our communities.
HUMANITY
We value and respect everyone’s humanity, making sure victims and survivors have a safe space to share their stories in their own way.
